May is mostly dry, with crisp mornings, mild afternoons and chilly evenings. Rain is far less common than in April, so the stone lanes around San Blas and the open terraces at Sacsayhuamán are easier to explore on foot. The sun feels strong at Cusco's high elevation, though clouds can still roll in.

You'll have good conditions for day trips to the Sacred Valley and hikes on the Inca Trail. Evenings are cold, so outdoor dinners may be less appealing. Take it gently when you first arrive; Cusco's altitude can make even a short walk feel like hard work.

May events and crowds

The Qoyllur Rit'i pilgrimage takes place in the mountains near Cusco, usually around May or early June. Its date changes each year. Thousands of pilgrims travel to the Sinakara sanctuary, so expect busy roads and limited transport near the event. It's a moving cultural experience, but the high-altitude trek isn't suited to everyone.

May sits between the wetter months and the busier dry-season peak. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in June, July and August, and prices are often less pressured than during those peak months. Still, popular sights can feel busy, especially as the dry season gets underway.

For families, May's drier days make wandering Cusco's historic centre easier, but keep afternoons flexible while you adjust to the altitude.

At Sacsayhuamán, the large stone walls are exposed to the sun, while the walk back downhill into the centre can feel cold later in the day. Visit when you feel settled, and leave time to return before evening. In San Pedro Market, try a bowl of chairo, a local potato-and-meat soup, for a warming lunch after a morning outdoors.
