Festivals and quieter streets

Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September, though its date shifts each year. It's a family holiday, so expect more local travel around the festival itself. There isn't a major Jilin city festival that happens every September.

If you hate crowds, you'll usually find the city calmer than during August's summer holiday rush. Guesthouses and hotels may also be less busy, though festival dates can bring a short-lived rise in demand. October is drier and cooler, but the National Day holiday at the start of the month can make travel busier.

For a relaxed afternoon, walk through Beishan Park and take a break at one of its temples. The park's paths climb, so rain can make the slopes awkward; pick a dry day if you want to explore on foot.
