Visiting Jilin in February
February: deep winter
February in Jilin is still properly cold. Days reach about -6°C, but nights can fall to -18°C. The air is often dry-feeling despite high humidity, and snow or ice can make riverside paths slippery. With six hours of sun a day, you'll get bright spells, but sightseeing outside can feel tiring after a while.
The cold suits a visit to Beidahu Ski Resort, or a short outing to see the famous rime ice along the Songhua River. Keep indoor stops in your day, such as Jilin City Museum, rather than expecting long, comfortable walks. March is much milder, so February isn't the best choice for hiking or a relaxed city break.
Festivals and holiday crowds
Jilin's winter Rime Ice and Snow Festival is a seasonal draw, though event dates can vary. Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival may also fall in February. During the New Year travel period, trains and popular sights can be busy, and prices may rise. Outside that holiday rush, February is generally quieter than peak summer, but ski areas still attract visitors.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the Chinese New Year holiday and visit the river on a weekday.
A local tip
For rime ice, head to the Songhua River early in the day, when the frost-covered trees are usually easiest to see. The riverside can be very cold, so make the outing short and warm up at a nearby café afterwards. If you're staying near the river, ask locally about current viewing conditions before setting out; rime depends on the weather and isn't guaranteed.
February has only a few days of rain, but frozen ground and sharp cold shape the trip more than rain does. Pack your sightseeing around short outdoor visits, with time indoors between them.
