When to go to Hamilton: a seasonal guide
Mild winters, warm and humid summers
Hamilton doesn't have a true cold season. From January to March, highs sit around 19 to 20°C. That's fine for walking Front Street or catching the ferry across the harbour, but it's too cool for most people to swim. Days are grey fairly often, with only two to three hours of sun on average.
Summer runs from June to September. It's hot, sticky and the sea is warm. August is the hottest month at 28°C, and it's also the rainiest in terms of days, with rain on 20 of them. Those showers are often short, so you can duck into a café and wait it out. Hurricane season runs through autumn, with September and October the most exposed, so keep your plans flexible then.
Which month for which trip
April and May are the sweet spot for most people. The air is warm but not heavy, and the island's gardens and Crown-and-Anchor-style lunches on the water feel easy. Pink-sand beaches like Horseshoe Bay are pleasant to walk, though the sea can still feel fresh in April. May is warmer, and it's a good time to try a swim.
If you want proper beach days, aim for July. It has the most sun of any month, at 8 hours a day. Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays make that the easiest time for them to swim and snorkel.
November is the quiet surprise. It's rated Excellent, with highs of 23°C and less humidity than summer. Hiking or cycling the Railway Trail is far more comfortable then than in August.
Crowds, high season and events
High season is roughly May to September. Cruise ships fill Dockyard and Hamilton's waterfront, and hotels cost the most. Winter is the low season. It's quieter and cheaper, though some beach clubs and boat trips scale back.
The big sporting date is the America's Cup-style sailing scene, but the most reliable event is Bermuda Day on 24 May, with a parade through Hamilton and a half marathon. Cup Match, a two-day cricket rivalry between east and west ends of the island, falls in late July or early August and brings a public holiday. Expect packed buses and ferries.
If you hate crowds, pick April or November. You'll get the best weather and more room on the beaches.
