Hamilton and the rest of the island

Bermuda is small, so the weather barely changes from one end to the other. Hamilton is our only listed spot, and its timing works for the whole island. You can swim at Horseshoe Bay in the south and still be back in the city for dinner.

The real difference is between the city and the beaches. Hamilton is the cruise and ferry hub, so it feels busy on ship days. The pink-sand south shore beaches are quieter on the days when the weather turns.

The seasons

April and May are the sweet spot. The days are warm but not sticky, and the island is green with flowers. The sea is still cool, so you'll want to be a brave swimmer. November is the other good pick. It's mild and calm, and the summer crowds are long gone.

August is the hottest month, at 28°C. Afternoons feel humid, but the water is at its best for snorkelling and shipwreck dives. Travelling with kids? Summer is when the beaches and boat trips are at their most fun.

October is the wettest month, with 128 mm of rain. Showers tend to pass quickly, but it's also hurricane season, which runs through the autumn. Check the forecast and make sure your travel insurance covers storms.

Crowds, holidays and events

High season runs from late spring to early autumn, when cruise ships fill Hamilton and the Royal Naval Dockyard. Hotel rooms are priciest in summer. Winter is the quiet season, and some beach clubs and boat tours cut back.

Two events shape the calendar. Bermuda Day, on the last Friday in May, brings a parade through Hamilton and a half marathon. Cup Match is a two-day cricket game between the island's east and west ends, held around the start of August. Both are public holidays, and locals celebrate hard. Shops close, and ferries run on holiday timetables.

If you hate crowds, aim for early May or November. You'll get decent weather, calm beaches and plenty of room at the Crystal Caves.
