When to go to Philadelphia: a seasonal guide
May and September–October: the sweet spots
If you want easy walking weather, aim for May, September or October. May is mild and green, with highs around 22°C. September is warm but less sticky than summer. October is crisp and sunny enough for a long wander through Old City, the neighbourhood around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. You can cover Society Hill and Rittenhouse Square on foot without feeling wrecked. Fall is also good for the Schuylkill River Trail and the paths in Fairmount Park.
Summer: hot, damp and busy
June to August is hot and humid, and July is the wettest month. Rain falls on 14 days in both June and July, usually as quick thunderstorms. Afternoons can feel heavy, so do museums in the middle of the day. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation and the Franklin Institute all give you air-conditioning and plenty to see.
This is peak season, especially around July 4th, when Independence Day events fill Old City. Travelling with kids? School holidays make it easy, and the splash-friendly spots along the Delaware River waterfront help. Evenings are the best time to be outside. Grab a cheesesteak, or a soft pretzel from a street cart, and eat it on a bench.
Winter and early spring: cold, quiet and cheap-ish
December to February is the coldest stretch. January is the chilliest month, with highs of 4°C and lows of -5°C. Skies are grey, with only about four hours of sun a day. If you hate crowds, this is your window. Lines at the big sights shrink, and you can spend a long afternoon in the Reading Terminal Market, the huge indoor food hall, without a squeeze.
December has a cosy side. Holiday lights and the Christmas Village at Love Park draw visitors. Then the Mummers Parade, a loud, feathered, sequin-heavy New Year's Day tradition, brings a burst of colour in January. March is still raw and often wet, but it's fair for a short city break. Spring picks up in April, when cherry blossoms appear at the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, with highs around 17°C.
Which month for which trip?
For history and walking, pick May, September or October. For museums and food, any cold month works. For a family trip tied to school holidays, go in summer and plan around the heat. November is a good fallback: it's drier than most months, with rain on only 7 days, and the crowds are thin.
