December feels cold and damp

December days reach about 7°C, but nights can dip to -2°C. Rain falls on around 10 days, and short daylight hours can make outdoor sightseeing feel chilly and rushed. You can still walk the historic district between Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, but duck into the museums when the weather turns wet. Save long strolls along the Schuylkill River Trail for a brighter day.

If you hate crowds, visit the outdoor sights on a weekday and keep a museum nearby as your backup.

Holiday lights and markets

Christmas Village brings German-style market stalls to LOVE Park and City Hall, with seasonal food and gifts. The Macy's Christmas Light Show inside the Wanamaker Building is another classic; it's a welcome warm stop near Center City. Both draw festive crowds, especially around weekends and the holidays.

Travelling with kids? Pair the light show with a visit to Reading Terminal Market, where you can warm up over a roast pork sandwich or a soft pretzel.

Crowds and costs

December is generally quieter and often less expensive than Philadelphia's popular May and September-to-October months. But holiday weekends can be busy, and hotel rates may rise around Christmas and New Year. Early December is a better bet if you want the seasonal atmosphere without as many visitors.

For an easy holiday walk, start at City Hall, cross Dilworth Park, then head to LOVE Park. The displays are close together, so you can cut the walk short if the rain or cold gets wearing.
