October feels warm in Gitega, but the rain changes the shape of your day. Showers fall on many days, and thick cloud often softens the light. You'll get some dry spells, yet muddy paths and sudden rain can spoil a long walk.

The National Museum of Gitega is a good choice when the sky turns grey. Between showers, explore the city centre or make the trip to Gishora, where you can see Burundi's royal drummers perform. A quieter month

October doesn't bring the big tourist rush of June to September, Gitega's best-weather stretch. You'll likely find fewer visitors around town than in those months. Prices may be lower too, though local rates can vary.

October 13 is Rwagasore Day, a public holiday honouring Burundi's independence hero, Prince Louis Rwagasore. Some services may close or change hours, so keep plans flexible around the date.

If you hate crowds, October could suit you, as long as you don't mind wet afternoons.

Make room for rain

With limited sunshine and frequent showers, this isn't the easiest month for a tightly packed sightseeing schedule. Keep the museum for a rainy spell, and treat Gishora as a fair-weather outing. The cooler evenings can feel pleasant after a sticky afternoon.

For a practical local tip, ask about Gishora drum performances before travelling from Gitega. The site is outside town, and rain can make the trip less appealing. If the weather turns, stay in Gitega and try a plate of mukeke, a local fish dish, instead.
