When to visit Burundi
Gitega's dry season is the sweet spot
If you want easy travel, aim for June to September. These are the driest months in Gitega, and the roads, trails and markets are all much simpler to get around. Days are warm and the skies are often bright. Evenings feel pleasant rather than hot.
September is the hottest month, at 27°C. It's still comfortable, but afternoons can feel dusty and dry by then. Gitega sits on a high plateau in the centre of the country, so it's cooler than the lowlands. Our data only covers Gitega, so treat this as a guide to the highlands rather than the whole country.
The wet months
November is the wettest month in Gitega, with 257 mm of rain. That's a lot. Expect heavy downpours, muddy red-dirt roads and slow journeys between towns. If you're planning to visit the Gitega National Museum or the old royal sites around Gishora, where the ceremonial drums are kept, a dry day makes life much easier.
Burundi has two rainy periods, with the heaviest rain usually from around October to May. A short break often comes in between. If you can't travel in the dry season, the early part of the year can be a fair compromise, but check conditions before any long road trip.
Holidays, crowds and low season
Burundi doesn't have a big tourist rush. The dry months are the busiest, but that mostly means more aid workers, business travellers and visitors with family. Hotels in Gitega and in Bujumbura, the main city and the usual entry point, are rarely packed.
Independence Day on 1 July is a national holiday. Expect celebrations, closed offices and some busy transport. Other public holidays, such as Christmas and Labour Day, also shut banks and government offices, so get your cash and paperwork sorted the day before.
Travelling for the drumming? Burundi's royal drummers are famous, and performances are the cultural highlight. Ask your host or hotel about upcoming shows, as dates aren't always fixed.
