March: rain shapes the day

March is warm but often damp in Gitega. Daytime highs reach 25°C, but rain falls on about 25 days, with thick cloud and little sunshine. The air can feel sticky, and showers may interrupt plans without warning.

You can still visit the Musée National de Gitega, where indoor displays make a good rainy-day stop. Save walks around the city centre for brighter breaks, and don't count on clear views or dry conditions for long outings. The nearby hills can be slippery after rain, so avoid setting off on a long rural walk when showers are building.

International Women's Day falls on 8 March and is observed in Burundi. It's a useful date to know, though Gitega isn't known for a major March festival that draws visitors from abroad.

March is generally a quieter, wetter time to visit than June to September, Gitega's more favourable travel season. You may find fewer visitors and better-value stays than in those busier months, though prices vary by hotel and date.

For a practical rainy-day plan, keep the Musée National de Gitega near the top of your list and ask your guesthouse about the state of local roads before heading beyond town. Rain can make rural routes muddy, so a short city visit may work better than a day trip.
