February is warm in Gitega, but rain shapes much of the day. Highs reach 25°C and nights cool to 15°C. Rain falls on about 20 days, with thick cloud and little sunshine, so expect damp walks and muddy ground rather than long, clear afternoons.

The National Museum of Gitega works well when showers interrupt your plans. You can also visit the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, but rain may make the approach muddy. Save longer walks around town for a break in the weather, and don't count on reliable views of the surrounding hills.

Events and quieter streets

Burundi's National Unity Day falls on 5 February. It's a national holiday, so some services and shops may close; ask locally before setting out. Gishora's royal drummers are a special Gitega-area tradition, though don't assume there'll be a performance on your visit.

If you hate crowds, February is generally calmer than the June-to-September best-weather season. Rain keeps many visitors away, and you may find guesthouses more flexible than in those drier months. Prices can vary, though, and there's no guarantee of a discount.

February is a poor month for outdoor plans, not a reason to stay indoors all day. Keep the museum and town sights as your dependable options, then fit in Gishora if the skies ease. The nearby roads can become slippery, so check conditions with your guesthouse before heading out.
