When to visit Morocco

Inland cities and the coast pull in different directions

Morocco isn't one climate. Marrakesh and Fes sit inland and bake in summer. July in Marrakesh reaches 40°C, and Fes peaks at 39°C in August. Midday in the medina (the old walled city) is hard work then, and you'll want a long break indoors.

The coast is easier. Essaouira tops out at 25°C in August, helped by the Atlantic wind. Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca stay mild too. If you want beach days in summer, head to the coast and skip the desert-edge heat.

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots

April and May suit Fes best, and October works too. Days are warm, the light is soft, and you can walk the tanneries and the Bou Inania Madrasa without wilting. Marrakesh and Agadir are at their best from November to April, when it's sunny but not scorching. Winter nights in Marrakesh can be cool, so a warm top helps on the Jemaa el-Fna square after dark.

November is the wettest month in every city we cover. Fes gets the most, at 101 mm. It's not a washout everywhere, but Fes and Tangier can turn grey and damp. Rabat is the easy pick if you want flexibility, since February to December all work well there.

Holidays, crowds and prices

Ramadan, the month of daytime fasting, moves about eleven days earlier each year. Travel is still possible. Many cafés close by day, and things feel quieter until sunset, when the whole city eats together. Eid al-Fitr, which ends Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha bring packed trains and buses as families travel home. Book transport early around those dates. Throne Day on 30 July is a national holiday too.

High season runs from spring through early summer and again in autumn, plus Christmas and New Year in Marrakesh. Agadir fills with European families during school holidays. Low season is deep summer inland and the damp weeks of November. Hate crowds? Try Marrakesh in January or Essaouira in September.
