April weather on the coast

April feels mild and bright in Essaouira, with afternoons around 20°C and evenings near 16°C. Rain is limited to about four days, and the sea breeze can make the waterfront feel cooler than the sunny streets. It's a comfortable month for wandering the medina, browsing its lanes and walking the ramparts at Skala de la Ville.

The steady wind suits kiteboarders at Essaouira Beach, but it can make a long, lazy beach day chilly. If you're hoping for calm water or hot-weather lounging, April may feel too cool. The light showers are usually a small interruption, not a reason to skip the trip.

What to do, and when

Take a walk along the beach or explore the port, where blue fishing boats crowd the harbour. For lunch, try grilled sardines near the fish stalls; the sea air makes a warm meal especially welcome.

If you hate crowds, April is a good fit: it's generally quieter than the busy summer period and June's Gnaoua World Music Festival. Prices are often gentler than during those peak times, though they vary by dates and accommodation. There's no major annual festival fixed to April. Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr follow the lunar calendar, so they can fall in April in some years; opening hours and meal times may shift.

Travelling with kids? The sheltered lanes inside the medina offer a break when the wind picks up along the beach. For an easy outing, walk from Bab Sbaa to the Skala, then pause at a café inside the walls rather than choosing a table on the exposed seafront. April brings long, sunny days, but don't assume the afternoon warmth will last into evening. A light extra layer is handy for the walk back through the port.
