Visiting Chennai in July
July weather in Chennai
July feels hot, humid and often cloudy. Afternoon highs reach 34°C, while nights stay warm at 26°C. Rain falls on 19 days, but showers don't necessarily last all day. The city gets little sunshine, so outdoor plans can feel sticky and changeable.
You can still visit indoor sights such as the Government Museum in Egmore, or take a break in a café around Alwarpet. Leave long walks along Marina Beach for a dry spell, and don't count on a sunny beach day. Swimming in the sea isn't a safe plan there.
Temples and quieter streets
Aadi, a Tamil month that usually begins in July, brings special worship and celebrations at temples. Aadi Pooram is one festival to look out for; its date shifts each year. You may see more local visitors at temples, even while the city has fewer leisure travellers overall.
If you hate crowds, July can feel calmer than Chennai's cooler travel months. It's low season for sightseeing, and hotel rates are often less pressured than in peak season. Rain can disrupt outings, though, and the heat makes a packed day tiring.
Make the most of your visit
Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option close by, such as the Children's Museum inside the Government Museum complex. You can also use Chennai Metro to get around without relying on a long, sweaty walk between neighbourhoods.
For Marina Beach, check local conditions before heading into the water; the shore isn't a swimming beach. If rain catches you near Mylapore, duck into Kapaleeshwarar Temple when it's open, then try a hot filter coffee nearby. July is wetter than June, though August is wetter still, so expect damp plans rather than a washout every day.
