Chennai Weather in April

April feels hot

Chennai is already very hot in April, with daytime highs around 36°C and nights still warm. The humidity can make a walk through Mylapore feel sticky, even when the sky is fairly clear. Rain is limited, so you're unlikely to lose many sightseeing days to showers.

Plan outdoor visits for early morning or evening. Kapaleeshwarar Temple and a stroll along Marina Beach are more pleasant then. Save the middle of the day for the Government Museum in Egmore or a long, cool break indoors. Avoid a midday beach walk or a full day of sightseeing on foot.

Festivals and local days

Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, usually falls in mid-April. You may see families visiting temples and festive meals served at home and in restaurants. It's a nice time to notice local traditions, though it isn't a large street festival across the city.

Travelling with kids? Keep an afternoon stop indoors; the heat can make even short outings tiring.

Quieter than winter

April is generally less comfortable for visitors than January, one of Chennai's best months. Tourist crowds tend to be lighter, and hotel rates may be easier to find than during the cooler winter season. It's not a quiet city, though: locals still fill markets, temples and beaches, especially in the evening.

For a practical local fix, try a tiffin meal in Mylapore after visiting Kapaleeshwarar Temple. Idli or dosa makes an easy break from the heat, and you can explore nearby streets once the sun is lower. May gets just as hot and brings more rain, so April can suit you if you're happy to build your day around the cooler hours.
