May: hot and sticky

Chennai is already very hot in May, with highs around 36°C and nights staying warm. Humidity makes afternoons feel heavier, and the sun can be tiring during long walks. Rain falls on some days, but it won't reliably cool the city.

Sightseeing works best in the morning. Visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore before the heat builds, then spend the hottest hours somewhere air-conditioned. Marina Beach is better near sunset, though the air can still feel sticky. Save long outdoor walks and hikes for cooler months.

May brings Labour Day on May 1, marked by gatherings around the Labour Statue on Marina Beach. It's a local public holiday, not a major tourist festival. Tamil New Year falls in April, so don't expect its celebrations in May.

May is low season for sightseeing because of the heat. You'll usually find fewer visitors than in January, one of Chennai's best months, and accommodation can cost less. The trade-off is that outdoor plans take more effort, and some days bring brief rain.
