May weather by the sea

May feels warm and bright in Cannes, with afternoons around 21°C and long daylight for wandering. You can stroll La Croisette, explore the old streets of Le Suquet, or take a boat to the Lérins Islands. Rain falls on several days, so don't make every plan depend on a beach day. The sea may still feel cool for a long swim, especially earlier in the month.

Film Festival crowds

The Cannes Film Festival takes place in May, bringing film crews, stars and visitors to the city. The red carpet and screenings around the Palais des Festivals are exciting to see, but central streets get crowded and hotel prices rise during festival dates. Outside that busy spell, May is still a popular month, with better value than the peak summer months. If you hate crowds, choose dates outside the festival and stay away from the Palais at screening times.

May is one of Cannes' best months for a city break: it's warmer than April, while June is hotter and drier. With some cloudy or rainy spells, keep a museum or a long lunch in Le Suquet as a backup to the beach. Try socca, a chickpea flatbread, at a local market or café. For a practical festival tip, watch the red carpet from the public viewing area beside the Palais des Festivals, rather than expecting access to screenings.
