April days by the sea

April feels mild in Cannes, with highs of 18°C and lows of 11°C. You'll get spring sunshine, but clouds and passing showers can interrupt a day outdoors. Rain falls on 8 days, so the weather can change between a bright morning and a damp afternoon.

The Croisette is pleasant for a stroll, and the old lanes of Le Suquet are easier to explore without summer heat. Beach time is possible, but the sea may feel too chilly for a long swim. Save a full beach day for May or June if swimming is your main goal.

April events and crowds

Canneseries, the city's television festival, is usually held in April. Screenings and industry events bring extra activity around the Palais des Festivals, though the crowds are smaller than during the Cannes Film Festival in May. Easter can also fall in April, and French school holidays may make some travel days busier.

If you hate crowds, choose a week outside Canneseries and Easter. April is generally calmer and less expensive than May, when the film festival draws huge crowds, and the summer peak. It's a good time for a city break if you want room to wander, but some beach clubs may not yet be fully open.

A useful local tip

Take the ferry from the Old Port to Île Sainte-Marguerite for a quieter change of pace. April's longer daylight gives you time to walk its pine paths and visit Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was held. Check the ferry timetable before setting out, since choppy or rainy weather can affect the trip.
