December weather

Willemstad stays warm in December, with highs near 28°C and lows around 27°C. Humidity is high, so afternoons can feel sticky, especially around Otrobanda's colourful streets. Rain falls on 13 days, but showers don't usually rule out a whole day.

You'll still have plenty of sun for a swim at Mambo Beach or a stroll along Handelskade. Save long walks through Punda for a cooler part of the day, and don't count on every afternoon staying dry. November is wetter, while January is drier.

Christmas and New Year

December brings Christmas decorations, church services and family gatherings across the island. Willemstad's historic centre looks especially festive, and restaurants may serve local dishes such as keshi yena, a baked cheese dish filled with meat.

New Year's Eve is lively, with fireworks and the local pagara tradition: long strings of firecrackers set off in the streets. If you're staying near Punda or Pietermaai, expect noise and crowds around the celebrations.

Crowds and local tips

The Christmas and New Year holiday stretch is among Willemstad's busiest periods. Hotels and flights can cost more than in quieter months, and popular beaches and restaurants fill faster. If you hate crowds, visit in early December rather than around the holidays.

Travelling with kids? Take the free ferry across St Anna Bay if Queen Emma Bridge swings open for passing ships. It's a handy way to get between Punda and Otrobanda, and the short ride gives you a lovely view of Handelskade.
