When to go to Vaduz: a seasonal guide
Summer: warmest, but wet
July is the warmest month, with highs of 23°C, and August is close behind. Days feel mild rather than hot, which suits walking. Rain is the catch. It falls on about 20 days a month, often as short showers, and August is the wettest month at 188 mm. July is only a little behind.
Summer is high season, though Vaduz never feels packed. Most visitors come as day trippers from Switzerland, so the main street, Städtle, is busiest around midday. Liechtenstein's National Day is on 15 August. There are speeches at the castle meadow, a big fireworks show and a party in town. The castle, Schloss Vaduz, is the prince's home and closed to visitors, but the walk up to it is worth doing on a dry afternoon.
Spring and autumn: the quieter middle
April is cool at 12°C, and May is greener but very wet, with rain on 21 days. Hiking in the valley is fine. Higher trails may still hold snow, so stick to the Rhine valley paths until June.
September and October are the sweet spot if you want walking without crowds. Days are still mild, and rain eases to 15 days in September and 13 in October. Autumn colour brings the hills around Triesenberg to life. Look out for the Alpine cattle coming down from the high pastures in early autumn, a tradition locals call the Alpabtrieb. Mountain huts start to close later in October, so check before you plan a long hike.
Winter: cold, grey and cosy
From November to March, expect low cloud and little sun. January and December get only about two hours a day. Valley temperatures sit around freezing, and January lows reach -7°C. This is the low season for city sightseeing, and some days feel flat.
But if you came for snow, you're in the right country. Malbun, the local ski area above Vaduz, is small and relaxed, which makes it good for families and beginners. Come in December for the Christmas market and warm evenings of cheese fondue or Käsknöpfle, the local cheese dumplings.
Which month for which trip?
Choose June to October for walking and sightseeing. Pick July or August for the warmest days, and bring a rain jacket. Choose September for the best mix. Winter works only if skiing at Malbun is the plan.
