When to visit Liechtenstein
Vaduz and the rest of the country
Liechtenstein is tiny, so timing barely changes from place to place. Vaduz sits in the Rhine valley, and it's the only spot on our site. The valley is the mildest part. Up in the mountains around Malbun and Steg, it's cooler all year and the snow comes sooner.
Summer and early autumn: June to October
This is the best stretch for most people. July is the hottest month at 23°C, which feels warm but not heavy. Days are good for walking the Fürstensteig, a high trail with big views, or the gentler paths below Vaduz Castle. The castle is the prince's home, so you can only see it from outside.
August is the wettest month, with 188 mm. Rain often comes in heavy bursts, so keep a plan B. The Kunstmuseum in Vaduz and the National Museum are good indoor options.
September and October are calmer. Vineyards near Vaduz turn gold, and the air is crisp. If you hate crowds, this is your window.
National Day and busy times
Liechtenstein's National Day is on 15 August. Vaduz fills with people for speeches, fireworks and a party on the castle meadow. It's fun, but it falls in the wettest month, so bring a waterproof jacket. Hotels are tighter around then, and the same goes for school holidays in neighbouring Switzerland, Austria and Germany over summer.
Winter and low season
Winter brings snow, and the mood turns cosy. Malbun is the small ski area, good for families and beginners. Vaduz has a Christmas market in December, with mulled wine and lights near the main street, Städtle. Mornings can be cold and grey in the valley, so don't expect long sightseeing days.
Spring is the quietest season. Trails higher up may still hold snow, and some mountain huts stay closed. Visit in May if you want fresh green hills and fewer people, but expect mixed weather.
Since most visitors come by bus or train through Switzerland, check the timetables when you travel in winter. Services thin out on Sundays and holidays.
