Visiting Tulum in September
September: hot and rainy
September feels hot from morning to night, with highs around 30°C and lows near 26°C. It's also very humid, and rain falls on 24 days on average. Showers can interrupt beach time, and the sea may be rough during storms. Tulum's ruins are still worth visiting, but wet paths can be slippery and the exposed site offers little shade.
A rainy spell can make a cenote swim a better bet than a long beach afternoon. Keep plans flexible: heavy showers may pass, but don't count on a full day of sun.
Independence Day
Mexico's Independence Day is September 16. In Tulum Pueblo, you may see celebrations around the town's main square, including the traditional "Grito," a call marking the start of the independence celebrations. Expect more local activity that evening, rather than a major festival across the whole resort area.
If you're visiting for the beach clubs, September isn't their most reliable month. They're quieter, and the weather can cut short a day by the sea.
Fewer visitors, with a caveat
September is part of Tulum's low season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors and lower prices than in the busy winter months. It's a quieter time for the Tulum Archaeological Zone and the beaches near the Hotel Zone. But it's also hurricane season, and storms can disrupt plans.
If you hate crowds, you may like the quieter feel; if you need dependable beach weather, choose February or March instead.
For a practical rainy-day option, visit Gran Cenote near town, where you can swim in clear water beneath the limestone roof. Check local conditions before heading out, since storms can affect access and swimming.
