Visiting Tulum in August
August: hot and rainy
August in Tulum feels sticky from morning on, with warm nights and frequent rain. The high reaches 30°C, and rain falls on 22 days. July is also hot, but August gets more rain; September gets more still. Showers can interrupt beach time and leave paths muddy, so keep plans flexible.
Cenotes such as Gran Cenote can still be a good choice between showers. For a drier spell, explore the Tulum ruins, but their open paths offer little shade. Save a long visit for a break in the clouds.
Quieter, but not empty
August is low season compared with the busy winter months, so you'll often find fewer visitors and lower prices. But it isn't deserted: summer holidays bring families and other travellers, especially around the beach road.
If you hate crowds, August may suit you better than winter, as long as you're happy to trade reliable beach weather for quieter days. Mexico's Assumption of Mary is marked on August 15, though Tulum isn't known for a major August festival.
Make the rain work
Humidity is high, and sunshine averages 6.6 hours a day. That can make long walks feel tiring, especially when the sun breaks through after a shower. Skip an ambitious midday trek and leave room to change plans.
At the Tulum ruins, check the coastal path before heading down to the beach; rain can make the steps slippery. Travelling with kids? Pair a short ruins visit with a nearby cenote, rather than trying to spend the whole day outdoors. For dinner, try cochinita pibil, slow-roasted pork often served in tacos, at a restaurant in town.
