Best Time to Visit Tulum
Mexico · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Tulum is February and March, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 28°C and 31°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over June and August to October; October is the wettest month with about 207 mm (8.1 in) of rain. August is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.
When to go to Tulum: a seasonal guide
Dry season: December to April
This is the stretch most people come for. Days are warm but not heavy, and the sea is calm enough for the beach clubs along the hotel zone road. February and March score best, with the lowest humidity and plenty of sun. April is hotter and just as dry, so it suits you if you want long beach days and don't mind sweating at the ruins.
It's also high season. Prices climb and the beach road gets slow. December and the weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest, and Easter week (Semana Santa) fills up with Mexican families too. If you hate crowds, aim for early February or late April. Get to the Tulum ruins when they open, because the clifftop site gets hot and packed by midday.
May to November: hot, wet and quiet
May is the in-between month. It's warmer, with more showers, but still manageable. From June the rain settles in. June, August, September and October all bring rain on most days, and October is the wettest at 207 mm. Showers are often short and heavy, then the sun returns. Humidity stays high, so evenings feel sticky.
Sargassum, a floating brown seaweed, can pile up on the beaches in the warmer months. It varies a lot from year to year, so check recent photos of the beach you're booking. Hurricane season runs through this period too, with September and October the riskiest. Take travel insurance that covers it.
The upside is quiet. You'll get cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) with few other swimmers, and hotels often drop their rates. Cenote Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are far more pleasant without a queue. In July the rain is lighter than in its neighbours, with the same warm sea.
Which month for which trip
For a classic beach holiday, pick February or March. For ruins and cenotes with fewer people, try late November or early December, when the rain eases but the holiday rush hasn't started. Travelling on a budget? Try May or July, and accept some wet afternoons. Late October into November is a good time to catch Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead, 1–2 November), when local altars and parades make the town feel especially lively.
