Best Time to Visit Merida

December to February: the sweet spot

This is when Merida feels best. Days are warm but not heavy, around 30 to 31°C, and evenings cool off enough for a walk without sweating through your shirt. Rain is rare and short. December and January top our comfort score, with February close behind.

It's also high season. Snowbirds (northerners escaping winter) fill the rentals in Centro and Santa Lucía. Christmas and New Year are busiest, so expect fuller hotels. Sunday is the day to be on Paseo de Montejo and the main plaza, when streets close to traffic for Mérida en Domingo, with food stalls and music. Day trips to Chichén Itzá and the cenotes (natural limestone swimming holes) are easiest in these months.

March to May: hot and getting hotter

March is still pleasant, with highs near 34°C and plenty of sun. Carnival usually lands in February or early March, and Merida's version has parades along Paseo de Montejo. It's lively without feeling overwhelming.

April and May are tough. Highs hit 36°C, and the afternoon sun is fierce. Do your ruin visits at Uxmal first thing, then spend midday in a cenote or a shaded courtyard café. Crowds thin out, and so do hotel rates. If you can handle the heat, this is a quiet time. May also brings the first real rain, with 10 wet days.

June to October: the wet season

Be honest with yourself about this one. It's humid, often above 80%, and rain falls on most days in June through September. Showers tend to be heavy and brief, often in the afternoon. Between them, the streets steam. Cenote trips can still work, but muddy roads and cloudy water happen.

The upside is green countryside, empty sights and low prices. If you like quiet museums and don't mind plans changing, it's a fair trade. June is the wettest month in our data, at 191 mm. Hurricane season overlaps, so keep an eye on forecasts for the Gulf.

November: the return of good weather

Rain eases to 56 mm and humidity drops. Highs sit near 30°C. Late October and early November bring Hanal Pixán, the Maya take on Day of the Dead, with altars, special tamales called mucbipollo, and cemetery visits. It's one of the best cultural moments to be here, and crowds are still modest before the December rush.
