November: warm with passing rain

November stays hot, with afternoons around 30°C and warm nights. Rain eases sharply from October, but showers still fall on several days, often leaving streets slick and the air sticky. You can explore Plaza Grande, the cathedral and the shady arcades between showers. It's also a good month for an evening stroll along Paseo de Montejo, when the heat has eased.

Skip long, exposed walks in the midday sun, and don't count on every afternoon staying dry. For a family trip, short visits to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya can be easier than a full day outdoors.

Hanal Pixán and local life

Early November brings Hanal Pixán, the Yucatec Maya tradition of honouring the dead. You may see colourful altars and local events around the city. Try mucbipollo, a large tamal traditionally made for the occasion. The Día de la Revolución holiday also falls in November, with public events in Mexico.

November is a shoulder month: generally calmer than December and January, Merida's best-weather months, and often less costly than the winter high season. It's busier around local events, though, so central streets can feel crowded then.

For an easy break from the heat, duck into the covered stalls at Lucas de Gálvez market and try a marquesita, a crisp rolled wafer filled with cheese or sweet toppings. Keep your outing flexible; a quick shower can change the feel of a walk through the centre.
