December is warm and very dry in Touba. Afternoons reach about 34°C, while evenings cool to around 18°C. Rain is rare, so you can expect dusty roads rather than rain-soaked plans.

The heat can feel tiring when you're walking around the Great Mosque or the markets. Keep sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day, then take a quieter break during the afternoon. December also works well for visiting local religious sites and trying Touba coffee, a spiced coffee sold around town. It's not a month for long, exposed walks in the midday sun.

Holidays and crowds

Touba doesn't have a fixed December festival. The Grand Magal, its huge annual pilgrimage, follows the Islamic calendar, so its date changes from year to year. When it falls in December, expect a very different visit: crowds swell, transport gets busy and rooms become harder to find.

Otherwise, the city is usually calmer than during the Magal. Christmas and New Year can bring more travel across Senegal, though Touba remains a religious centre rather than a big holiday-party destination. Prices may rise around year-end, but December is still one of the better-weather months, alongside October and January.

A respectful visit

For families, dry days make short outings easier, but the afternoon heat can test young children. Plan a rest between visits rather than trying to see everything on foot.

Dress modestly around the Great Mosque, and ask locally before taking photos or entering religious spaces. Touba has rules that visitors should respect, including restrictions on alcohol. For a simple local stop, try Touba coffee from a street seller; it's often spiced with grains of selim, a fragrant West African spice. A taxi can spare you a hot walk between the mosque and central markets, especially when the sun is high.
