December: dry and sunny

December is warm, bright and very dry in Banjul. Days reach about 28°C, while evenings stay mild around 21°C. The air feels less sticky than in the wet season, and rain is unlikely to interrupt your plans. With plenty of sunshine, it's a comfortable month for walking around the city or taking the ferry across the Gambia River.

The sun can still feel strong around midday, so save longer walks for the cooler parts of the day. Banjul's open streets offer little shade, and afternoons can feel hot if you're exploring on foot.

City sights and Christmas

Visit Arch 22 for wide views over Banjul, then browse the stalls at Albert Market. December's dry conditions also suit a trip to nearby beaches, such as Cape Point, though you'll need to travel outside the city centre.

Christmas Day is celebrated in The Gambia, and you may find some businesses closed or running shorter hours. The season brings a festive feel, but Banjul isn't known for a major December festival. If you hate crowds, the market may feel calmer outside the busiest shopping hours.

High season and local tips

December is part of Banjul's best weather season, so it's busier than the rainy months. European visitors arrive for winter sun, and accommodation and flights can cost more than in the quieter wet season. The city itself can still feel relaxed compared with beach areas.

For a practical stop, visit Albert Market in the morning, then take a break with benachin, a local rice dish, nearby. If you're crossing to Barra, ask locally about the ferry queue before setting off; the crossing is a useful route, but waiting times can vary.
