When to visit Gambia

Dry season is the sweet spot

If you want sunshine and little rain, go between December and March. Days are warm and dry, and the nights are pleasant. This is the best window for Banjul, and it's also when most visitors come. Beach hotels in Kotu and Kololi (on the coast near Serrekunda) fill up, especially around Christmas and New Year. Europeans escaping winter make up much of the crowd.

Our data shows Banjul's hottest month is November, at 30°C. That surprises people, because it's a little hotter than the "winter" months that follow. It's still a good time to come, since the rains have stopped and the countryside is green.

The rainy season, honestly

The wet season runs roughly from June to October, and August is the wettest month in Banjul at 310 mm. Expect heavy downpours, sticky air and muddy roads. Some tracks upcountry can turn rough, and a few beach camps and lodges close or run quietly.

It's not all bad. Prices drop, the beaches are empty, and the landscape turns a deep green. Birdwatchers often like this time, with the Gambia River and spots like Tanji Bird Reserve full of life. Just plan for afternoon storms rather than all-day sun. If you hate crowds and don't mind the odd soggy afternoon, it can work well.

Holidays and events

Gambia is mostly Muslim, so Ramadan changes the rhythm of daily life. Some local restaurants close by day, though tourist areas stay open. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring family gatherings and busy travel between towns. The dates move each year, so check them before you book.

Independence Day on 18 February falls in the dry season, so expect parades and a busy Banjul. Travelling with kids? European school holidays at Christmas and Easter are the busiest times on the coast. For the best mix of good weather and calmer beaches, aim for early December or March.
