October's heat and rain

October is hot, with afternoons reaching 34°C and nights staying warm. Rain falls on several days, but it's much less wet than September. Showers can interrupt a trip across town, though they're unlikely to rule out every outing.

The Great Mosque of Touba is still worth visiting, and cloudy spells can make time outdoors feel easier. Save long walks around the city for cooler parts of the day, and don't count on dry conditions for every journey. Families with young children may find the sticky afternoons tiring, so keep visits to the mosque and other sights short.

Magal dates and crowds

The Grand Magal, Touba's major annual pilgrimage, follows the Islamic calendar. It can fall in October, but the date changes each year. When it does, pilgrims fill the city and travel becomes much busier; check the year's date before choosing your travel days.

Outside the Magal, October is a better bet for quieter visits than the pilgrimage period. It's also a transition month: rain eases, while November is much drier. Prices and room availability can tighten sharply around the event, but are generally less pressured away from it.

A respectful visit

At the Great Mosque, dress modestly and follow local guidance on where visitors may go. Touba is a holy city, so don't assume usual city rules apply. Ask before taking photos, especially around worshippers.

For a local pause, try Touba café, a strong spiced coffee sold by street vendors. Its caffeine can hit hard in the heat, so sip it slowly. If a shower catches you near the mosque, take shelter and wait it out rather than setting off on a long walk through wet streets.
