When to go to Touba: a seasonal guide
The dry, cooler months: December to February
This is the best stretch for most people. Days are warm but not punishing, and nights in December and January drop to a comfortable 17–18°C. Skies are dry, and the air feels crisp compared with the rest of the year. February starts to heat up, so it's a bit less comfortable than January.
Touba is Senegal's holy city, home of the Mouride Sufi brotherhood. The Great Mosque is the main sight. Visit in the cooler hours and dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees, and women should cover their hair. Alcohol and tobacco are banned in the city, so don't plan a night out here.
March to June: the hot season
Be honest with yourself about this one. By April and May, afternoons hit 41°C, and the heat sits on the town like a lid. Rain is almost nonexistent until June, when a few storms arrive and the nights stay warm. Sightseeing means a short outing in the early morning, a long rest indoors, and a stroll again after sunset. If you can pick another season, do.
July to September: the rains
August is the wettest month, with rain on 26 days. September is close behind. The sandy streets can turn muddy, and the sky is often grey. Humidity climbs past 75%, which makes the warm days feel sticky. Travel between towns can be slow after heavy downpours. On the plus side, the dry Sahel landscape turns green, and you'll find it quieter for casual visitors.
October and November: the shoulder
October is one of our top picks, though it's still a little damp, with rain on nine days. By November the rain has gone and it's drier again, with long sunny days. It's a good time to go if you want warm weather without the cold-season mornings.
The Grand Magal
Touba's big event is the Grand Magal, a huge pilgrimage marking the exile of the Mouride founder, Cheikh Amadou Bamba. It follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so the date moves about 11 days earlier each year. Millions of pilgrims arrive, and the city is extremely crowded. Rooms fill up, roads clog and food is shared freely by local hosts. If you want to see it, go with a Senegalese contact. If you'd rather avoid crowds, check the Magal dates and pick another week.
