You can still explore the harbour and the turf-roofed lanes of Tinganes between showers. The National Museum is a useful indoor stop. Save longer hikes for a drier day, and skip exposed coastal paths when wind and rain make footing difficult.

Christmas brings lights and local celebrations, while December 24, 25 and 26 are public holidays. Shops and services may close or keep shorter hours around those days, so don't count on a normal city-break schedule. Tórshavn's cafés and restaurants can also have holiday hours.

Travelling with kids? A stroll through the decorated town centre can be a nice change from a rainy afternoon indoors. For a warm Faroese meal, look for ræst kjøt, fermented mutton, on a menu; it's a local speciality, though not every restaurant serves it.

December is winter low season, so Tórshavn is generally quieter than in the summer months, when visitors come for longer days and outdoor trips. Accommodation may cost less than during peak summer, but holiday opening hours can limit your choices. June and August are better picks if you want more daylight and easier hiking.

If you hate crowds, December's calm streets may suit you, as long as you're happy to trade outdoor plans for weather flexibility. Head to the old harbour when conditions allow, then use the covered walkway at SMS shopping centre as a practical shelter nearby. Don't plan a full day around distant sights: the short daylight and frequent rain can quickly change your route.
