Visiting Torshavn in July
July weather in Tórshavn
July feels cool, damp and often cloudy, despite the long summer days. The high is 12°C and the low is 10°C. Rain falls on 18 days, and sunshine averages just 1.8 hours a day.
That doesn't rule out a good visit. You can explore the red-roofed buildings at Tinganes, browse the harbour and take coastal walks when the weather gives you a break. But don't count on a sunny beach day or clear views from a hike. Wet paths and low cloud can make outdoor plans less rewarding.
Ólavsøka and summer crowds
July's big event is Ólavsøka, Tórshavn's national festival, held on July 28 and 29. Expect rowing races, Faroese chain dancing and crowds around the town centre. It's a lively time to see local traditions, but quieter sightseeing is easier outside the festival.
If you hate crowds, visit earlier in July and keep Ólavsøka day flexible.
July is peak season, so Tórshavn feels busier than in June or August's quieter stretches. Rooms and transport can also cost more than in the shoulder months. June and August are both among the best months overall, but July's festival makes it special.
Make the most of a wet day
Keep an indoor stop in mind for rainy spells. The National Museum of the Faroe Islands, in Hoyvík, gives you a closer look at local history and culture. You can pair it with a stroll through the old lanes around Tinganes when the rain eases.
For Ólavsøka, stay near the centre if you want to dip in and out of the events. Roads and public spaces get busy, so walking between the harbour and the festival area is often simpler than relying on a car.
