December weather

Tehran feels properly wintry in December. Days reach about 11°C, while nights can fall to 1°C. Rain comes on some days, and shorter daylight leaves less time for wandering outdoors.

It's a good month for museums, palace interiors and café stops. The National Museum of Iran and Golestan Palace are useful choices when the sky turns grey. Save long walks in the Alborz foothills for clearer, milder weather; cold, wet paths can make them unpleasant. November is milder and wetter, while January is colder.

Yalda night

December's best-known local celebration is Shab-e Yalda, the winter-solstice gathering. Families stay up late, share fruit such as pomegranates, and read poetry by Hafez. If you're invited to a home, it's a lovely way to see a more personal side of Tehran.

There's no reason to expect the city to feel like a major international festival destination. Yalda is mainly a family occasion, so public sightseeing carries on much as usual.

Crowds and practical tips

December is winter low season, so Tehran usually feels less crowded than during the popular spring and autumn travel months. Hotels may cost less than in those busier periods, though rates vary. If you hate crowds, this is a calmer time for the Grand Bazaar and central museums.

For a cosy Yalda-inspired stop, look for pomegranates and other seasonal fruit at Tajrish Bazaar in northern Tehran. The metro's Line 1 runs to Tajrish, which makes the market easy to reach without relying on a long outdoor walk on a cold evening.
