Visiting Tehran in August
August heat in Tehran
August is dry, sunny and seriously hot. Afternoons can reach 36°C, and shade may still feel warm. It's a tougher month for long walks around Golestan Palace or the Grand Bazaar, where crowds and heat build indoors and out.
The mornings work better for sightseeing. Save Sa'dabad Palace's gardens for earlier in the day, then spend the hottest hours in a museum or café. Evenings are more comfortable for a stroll around Tabiat Bridge, when the city cools a little. Rain is rare, so you're unlikely to lose a day to showers.
If you love city walks, April, May and October are much easier months.
Events and summer crowds
Tehran doesn't have one major festival that falls in August every year. Islamic holidays such as Ashura follow a lunar calendar, so their dates shift; if one lands during your visit, expect religious processions and some businesses to close. Check the calendar for your specific trip.
Many Tehranis leave the city for summer breaks, so traffic and tourist crowds can feel lighter than in spring or autumn. Hotel demand may also be lower, though prices vary. The trade-off is the heat, and some local businesses may take a summer break.
Make the heat work for you
Plan indoor sights for the middle of the day, then head out again as evening arrives. The metro is a useful way to cross town without sitting in hot traffic. For a local meal, duck into a restaurant near the Grand Bazaar for dizi, a hearty lamb and bean stew; it's a welcome pause from sightseeing.
Travelling with kids? Keep Golestan Palace for the morning, then use the metro to reach an air-conditioned museum. At Tabiat Bridge, go later in the day, when the walk is less punishing and the city lights start to show.
