Visiting Stockholm in December
Cold, dark days
December is a raw, damp month in Stockholm, with temperatures hovering around freezing. It earns a 1/10 rating mainly because of the cold, and the city gets little daylight, so outdoor sightseeing can feel brief and chilly. Cloudy skies are common, and rain often falls as sleet or snow, which makes cobbled streets slippery. If you're weighing up the best time to visit, June and July are far more pleasant.
Still, the city has plenty to do indoors. The Vasa Museum and Fotografiska work well on grey afternoons. Save long walks around Gamla Stan for the brightest part of the day, and don't count on clear views from Monteliusvägen. It's not a great month for island-hopping or long outdoor plans, so plan your days around the light.
Christmas in Stockholm
If you do come, the season has its own charm. Skansen's Christmas market brings stalls, crafts and seasonal food to Djurgården. It's outdoors, so the cold is part of the visit. Around December 13, Lucia celebrations add candlelit singing in churches and other venues. Christmas Eve is the main family holiday in Sweden, and many shops and restaurants close or shorten their hours then.
Families who enjoy festive traditions can pair Skansen with a warm-up indoors at the Vasa Museum. For a local treat, try lussekatter, saffron buns sold around Lucia.
Crowds and local tips
December isn't Stockholm's busiest month overall, since summer draws far more visitors. Advent weekends can still feel crowded around the Christmas markets and Gamla Stan, though. Prices may rise around Christmas and New Year, while January is often quieter and cheaper, so it's worth comparing the two if flexibility is on your side.
Take tram 7 to the Skansen stop for the market, rather than walking all the way across Djurgården in the dark. Check the tram's service before you set out, especially on Christmas Eve, when city schedules can change.
