August feels warm and mostly sunny in Sarajevo, with afternoons reaching 28°C and cooler nights around 15°C. Rain falls on about nine days, so a shower can interrupt an outdoor plan. The long, bright days are good for wandering Baščaršija, visiting the Latin Bridge or riding the cable car up Trebević.

Save steep walks on exposed slopes for cooler parts of the day. A slow café stop or a museum visit works better when the old town feels hot underfoot.

Festival and crowds

The Sarajevo Film Festival takes place in August, bringing screenings and a lively feel to venues across the city. It's a good time to catch a film, but popular screenings and central streets can be busy.

If you hate crowds, visit Baščaršija in the morning and explore quieter neighbourhoods later. August is high season, so guesthouses and hotels can cost more than in quieter months. The festival can add extra pressure near its venues.

Summer is one of Sarajevo's best times to visit, and August is a strong month for combining city sights with time outdoors. July is slightly hotter and has nearly the same rainfall; September is cooler and wetter. If you prefer mild sightseeing weather, September may suit you better.

For a practical local tip, take the Trebević cable car up from the city, then walk part of the old bobsled track. It's a shaded break from the stone streets, with views back over Sarajevo. Travelling with kids? The cable car ride itself makes a fun change from sightseeing on foot.
