Visiting Sarajevo in September
September weather
September is one of the best months to visit Sarajevo, and it earns an excellent 9.2/10 on our comfort score. You'll feel the sun in the afternoon, but once you step into the shade or head out after dark, it cools off fast. Days reach about 22°C, and evenings can drop to 11°C, so bring a light layer. Rain falls on about 10 days, so a shower may interrupt your walk.
That mix of warm days and mild nights is why July to September is the window to aim for. Compared with August, you'll get the same comfortable sightseeing without the heavier heat. You can wander Baščaršija, cross the Latin Bridge, or ride the cable car up Trebević. The trails above the city are lovely, but wet paths get slippery, so don't plan an all-day mountain hike if rain is in the forecast.
Events and crowds
The Sarajevo Half Marathon is usually held in September and sends runners through the city. Some streets may close around race time, so check the date if you plan to drive. The Sarajevo Film Festival takes place in August, so don't expect its crowds or screenings in September.
If you dislike crowds, you'll find the old town calmer than in peak summer. September is still popular, though, and prices may not drop as much as they do later in autumn. Still, it's a good middle ground for pleasant sightseeing without August's hottest days.
A local tip
Travelling with kids? The cooler afternoons make a walk along the Miljacka River more comfortable, with stops at the bridges near the city centre.
When you're ready for a filling meal, order ćevapi in Baščaršija. These small grilled sausages come with somun, a soft flatbread. September's cooler evenings are perfect for a warm meal indoors, especially after the walk back from Trebević. Just keep an eye on the sky before you head up, because rain is common enough to change your plans.
