February is warm and very damp in São Tomé. The high and low are both 27°C, and rain falls on 24 days. Humidity is high, skies are often cloudy, and you'll get only a little sunshine. Showers can interrupt a beach day or make muddy tracks harder to walk.

You can still explore São Tomé city between showers, visit the National Museum in the old fort, or linger over lunch. Save long hikes and boat trips for a day with a decent forecast. The island's best weather usually comes later, in July and August.

What to do

Carnival can take place in February, depending on the year's dates. If it does, look for local parades and music in the capital. It's a lively change from the island's quieter feel, but check locally for the dates and route.

If you hate crowds, February is generally a quieter choice than July and August. Visitor numbers and prices may be lower in this wetter period, though Carnival can make the capital busier. Don't expect every hotel or tour to be empty or especially cheap.

A local tip

Travelling with kids? Keep a city outing flexible, so you can duck into the National Museum if a shower arrives. The museum is inside São Sebastião Fort, right by the waterfront.

For a rainy spell, try calulu, a local stew often made with fish and leafy greens. Ask for it in a restaurant in the capital, where you can wait out the weather over a slow meal. If you're heading out of town, ask your guesthouse about road conditions first; heavy showers can make island journeys slower.
