Sao Tome Weather in December

December: rain most days

December feels warm, sticky and often grey. The high and low are both 26°C, but humidity is high and sunshine is limited. Rain falls on 28 days, so expect showers to interrupt plans rather than wash out every day.

You can still explore São Tomé city, including the Fortaleza de São Sebastião and Mercado Municipal. Keep beach time flexible, and don't count on clear views or dry trails in Parque Natural Obô. November is wetter; January brings slightly less rain, but neither is a dry-season escape.

Christmas on the island

Christmas is a major holiday in São Tomé, and you'll notice church services and family celebrations. New Year's Eve brings another reason for locals to gather. Don't expect a large, fixed December festival calendar; much of the holiday atmosphere is centred on homes and churches.

If you hate crowds, December may suit you better than July or August, the island's best-weather months. Visitor numbers are generally lower in this rainy period, though Christmas and New Year can make flights busier and fares less predictable. The weather can also mean slower trips outside the capital.

Make room for rain

Plan sightseeing around breaks in the showers. A visit to the Fortaleza de São Sebastião works well when the sky is cloudy, while a long hike is less appealing on slick paths. Don't build your whole day around a beach or a distant viewpoint.

Travelling with kids? Keep a city stop in reserve for wet spells. One useful local tip: ask about road conditions before heading toward Parque Natural Obô, since rain can make forest routes muddy. At Mercado Municipal, you can duck in between showers and try local fruit or buy a snack without committing to a long outdoor outing.
