Best Time to Visit Sao Tome
Sao Tome and Principe · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Sao Tome is July and August, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 25°C and 27°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over March to May and November to December; March is the wettest month with about 170 mm (6.7 in) of rain. November is the least comfortable month, mainly because of the rain.

Gravana: the dry season, June to September
Locals call the dry season gravana. It's the best stretch for a visit, and July and August score highest. Days are cooler and the air feels lighter, though humidity stays high all year. Rain falls on only about six or seven days in those two months. Don't expect a blue-sky tan, though. The sun shows for around three hours a day, and cloud is common.
This is the time for hiking and beach days. You can walk to Pico Cão Grande, the tall volcanic needle in the south, with a decent chance of clear views. The trail through Obô Natural Park, in the island's forested interior, is less muddy too. The beaches near Praia Jalé and Praia Piscina are calmer to visit. June and September are good too, with a bit more rain.
Gravanito and the wet months
The rest of the year is wetter. October to May has two rainy spells, with a slightly drier patch around January and February. March and April are the wettest, with rain on nearly every day. Heavy showers can turn dirt roads into mud, which makes the south hard to reach. Your hiking plans may be washed out.
Still, the rain isn't all bad. Everything turns deep green, and cocoa and coffee plantations look their best. Showers often come in bursts, so mornings can be fine. If you're keen on birds, the forest is lively in these months. Just pack a proper rain jacket and accept that some days will be indoor days. Visiting roça Água-Izé or São João dos Angolares between downpours still works well.
Crowds and events
Sao Tome never gets really crowded. Even in the dry season, you'll often have a beach to yourself. Flights are limited, so seats and the few good guesthouses can fill up in July and August. Travelling with kids? The calmer seas and lower rain make that window easier.
Two events are worth knowing. Carnival comes in February, with music and costumes in the capital. Independence Day on 12 July brings parades and parties, and it falls in the best weather. Fishing villages also hold saint's day celebrations through the year, but dates shift, so ask locally. If you'd rather avoid noise, aim for June or September.
