Winter and spring: dry, sunny and easy

From November to March, Querétaro is at its best. Days are warm, nights are cool, and rain is rare. January is the coolest month, with highs of 24°C and lows around 8°C. December matches the 24°C highs. You'll want a jacket for evenings on the Plaza de Armas, when the old centre lights up and the cafés fill.

This is the season for walking. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Acueducto, with its tall stone arches, is easy to reach. You can also visit the Cerro de las Campanas hill, then wander the cobbled streets toward the Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo. Want wine? The Wine and Cheese Route towards Tequisquiapan and Bernal is pleasant now, with clear skies for the Peña de Bernal rock.

April and May turn hot, with highs of 32°C. Afternoons are strong, so plan museums and long lunches for midday. May is the start of the shift, with rain on about eight days.

June to September: green, wet and quiet

Rain comes most afternoons. July is the wettest month, with 151 mm over 24 days. August and September are nearly as wet. Mornings are often clear, then clouds build, so do your sightseeing early and keep the afternoon for a museum, like the Museo de Arte de Querétaro, or a long meal.

The upside is fewer visitors and a green countryside. If you're on a budget or hate crowds, this can work well. Just don't plan a hike in the Sierra Gorda for these months. Trails get muddy and views disappear into cloud.

Festivals and crowds

Mexican school holidays shape the busy times. Semana Santa, the week before Easter, brings Holy Week processions and plenty of weekend visitors from Mexico City. Late December is also busy, with posadas, the neighbourhood parties before Christmas.

September is a good month for a local atmosphere. Independence Day on 15 and 16 September has a big celebration, and Querétaro has a special place in that story. Early November brings Día de Muertos, with altars and marigolds around town. It falls in the dry, mild stretch, so it's a great time to visit.

Our pick? October to March, with November the easiest month of all. Come in late October if you want rain to ease off but fewer crowds than December.
