November to April: dry, sunny and cool at night

This is the easy part of the year. Days are mild to warm, skies are mostly clear, and rain is rare. January and December are the driest, with only a few wet days each. Nights are the catch. At 2,235 m up, mornings and evenings in December and January get properly cold, so you'll want a jacket for the walk home.

March and April are warmer and sunnier. April is the warmest of the dry months, with highs around 28°C. That suits long days out in Mexico City, which is a short ride away on the Metro or by bus from the Pantitlán hub. You can reach the Zócalo, Chapultepec and the Teotihuacan pyramids without much trouble.

Nezahualcóyotl itself isn't a sightseeing city. It's a huge, busy neighbourhood of markets, street food and family life. Dry months make it nicer to wander the markets and try tacos de canasta (soft tacos steamed in a basket). Late October and early November bring Día de Muertos, the Day of the Dead, when altars and marigolds fill homes and cemeteries. It's a good time to see local traditions, and November's weather is already settling into the dry pattern.

May to October: the rainy months

May still rates Excellent, but it's a turning point. Rain arrives on more than half the days, usually as a short storm. June to September is the real wet season. August and September tie as the wettest months, at 162 mm each, and July isn't far behind. Expect grey skies, humid air and rain nearly every day.

Rain here tends to come in the afternoon. Plan museums, markets and long lunches for after midday, and keep mornings for outdoor stops. Streets can flood quickly in heavy storms, so allow extra time for getting around. September is the gloomiest, with the most humidity and the least sun.

If you're on a budget, the wet season can be a fair deal. Mexico City's big sights are quieter outside school holidays, and indoor options like the Museo Nacional de Antropología are still excellent in the rain. October is a good middle ground. It's drier than the summer, and it leads straight into Día de Muertos.

Which month for which trip?

For sightseeing in the capital, pick February to April. For cultural travel, aim for late October or early November. If you hate cold mornings, skip December and January. Want lower prices and don't mind showers? Try June or October, and carry an umbrella.
