Best Time to Visit Iztapalapa

Dry season: November to April

This is the best stretch for Iztapalapa. Days are sunny and mild, and the rain is light and rare. Mornings and evenings are cool, so you'll want a jacket when the sun is low. By April the afternoons are the warmest of the year, and it's pleasant, not sticky.

Walking is easy now. Climb the Cerro de la Estrella, the hill in the middle of the borough, for a wide view over the city. On clear winter days you can often see the volcanoes on the horizon. Visit the Central de Abasto, the huge wholesale market, in the morning, when the fruit and vegetable stalls are busiest. Go with an open mind and good shoes, because it's big and crowded.

Holy Week and the Passion play

Iztapalapa is best known for its Passion of Christ, held during Semana Santa (Holy Week), usually in March or April. Hundreds of locals act out the story through the streets, and the Good Friday scenes draw huge crowds from across Mexico. Many of the performers have trained for months.

If you want to see it, expect packed streets, closed roads and a long wait for a good view. Take the metro, since driving near the route is a bad idea. If you hate crowds, come the week before or after. Schools are also on holiday then, so the whole city feels busier.

Rainy season: June to September

Rain here is a daily habit, not a washout. Mornings are often clear, then clouds build and storms roll in during the afternoon. July to September are the wettest, with rain on most days and little sun. Streets can flood quickly in a heavy storm, and traffic slows to a crawl.

It isn't all bad. The hills turn green, the air feels fresher, and hotels are quieter. Plan your outdoor time for the morning and keep afternoons for indoor stops, like a long lunch of tacos or a slow wander through a market.

The in-between months

May is still rated Excellent, but the showers start to return, and it's warm. October is a gentle step down, with fewer storms and softer light. Early November brings Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), when families decorate altars and graves. Nearby Mixquic is famous for its candlelit cemetery vigil, and it gets very busy.

If you want the easiest trip, aim for February or March. If you want a festival, pick Holy Week or early November.
