April is warm and mostly sunny, with afternoons that can feel hot as you walk around Iztapalapa. It's a good month for seeing the murals and historic buildings around the town centre, or climbing Cerro de la Estrella for views across Mexico City. Evenings cool off, so the change from a sunny afternoon to a chilly ride home can catch you out.

Rain is still fairly limited, but showers fall on some days. May is much wetter, so April usually gives you more chances to explore outdoors. Save a long, exposed walk on Cerro de la Estrella for a day with clear skies, and take shelter if a shower rolls in.

Holy Week and local crowds

The main April event is Iztapalapa's famous Passion Play, held during Holy Week. Local actors perform scenes from the story of Jesus, with processions through the streets and up Cerro de la Estrella. It draws very large crowds, so expect busy roads and packed viewing spots around the route.

If you hate crowds, visit the hill on a quieter day instead of during the performance. Holy Week can also bring more visitors and higher prices than an ordinary April week. Outside the holiday, April sits near the end of the city's generally popular November-to-April travel season; it's not as wet as May.

Travelling with kids? The Passion Play is memorable, but the crowds and long waits may be tiring. Pick a viewing spot well away from the busiest procession streets, or explore the area another day.

For a practical local tip, check which streets close for the Passion Play before heading to Cerro de la Estrella. A short trip across Iztapalapa can take much longer when the route is busy, and the usual way in may not be open. Outside event days, the hill is a better bet for a relaxed walk and broad city views.
