May: hot afternoons

May feels warm to hot in Santiago de Querétaro. Days reach 32°C, while evenings cool to around 15°C. April is just as hot, but May brings more rain: showers fall on about eight days. June is wetter still, so you may get a dry stretch, but don't count on every afternoon staying clear.

The historic centre works well for morning walks between Plaza de Armas, the Museo Regional and the old streets around Templo de Santa Rosa de Viterbo. Save the exposed walk along the aqueduct for earlier in the day. When the sun feels too strong, duck into a museum or settle in for a long lunch.

May: local dates

May brings Mexico's Labour Day on May 1 and the Cinco de Mayo commemoration on May 5. They're national dates, but they aren't the city's biggest annual celebrations. Mother's Day, May 10, is more noticeable in restaurants, where local families gather for meals.

If you hate crowds, avoid expecting a quiet restaurant meal on Mother's Day. The historic centre is still easier to explore than during the busier October-to-March travel season, but family celebrations can make popular dining spots lively.

May: a shoulder-season visit

May sits outside Querétaro's most popular travel months, so you'll generally find fewer visitors and better value than from October to March. It's a useful time for a city break if you can work around the heat and occasional showers. Don't plan a full afternoon outdoors at Cerro de las Campanas; its open paths offer little shade.

A practical local tip: take shelter from a passing shower in the Museo de Arte de Querétaro, set in the former San Agustín convent near the centre. Then try enchiladas queretanas, a local dish, at a nearby restaurant once the rain eases.
