January feels warm and humid on Saipan, with highs and lows both listed at 26°C. Rain falls on 13 days, but showers don't usually rule out a beach day. With about five hours of sun daily and plenty of cloud, you'll get a mix of bright spells and grey skies.

The sea suits swimming and snorkelling when conditions are calm. For a dry spell, visit the American Memorial Park or drive up to Mount Tapochau for island views. Rain can make trails slippery, so skip a long hike if the ground is slick. December is drier, while February gets less rain; January sits between them.

Holidays and crowds

Commonwealth Covenant Day, on January 8, marks the signing of the agreement that led to the Northern Mariana Islands' commonwealth status. Some local offices may close, so check before visiting one. New Year also brings holiday visitors, and January can feel busier than the quieter shoulder months. Prices may be higher around the holiday period, then ease later in the month.

If you hate crowds, visit popular sights after the New Year rush rather than during the holiday break. Saipan's best months overall include February to May and December, so January isn't the island's top pick for calm weather or the lowest prices.

A local tip

Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible plan for rainy spells: the Grotto is a famous sea cave, but its steep steps can be slippery after rain. Go only when the water and access are safe, and don't treat it as a casual swim stop.

For a gentler outing, walk the paths at American Memorial Park in Garapan, then find a sheltered café nearby if showers roll in. January's weather is still good for a relaxed island visit, but the cloud and rain mean it's worth having an indoor stop in mind.
