July weather

July feels warm, sticky and often cloudy. The high stays around 28°C, and humidity is high. Rain falls on most days, though showers can leave breaks for exploring. June is much drier, while August is wetter still.

You can visit Garapan's shops and cafés between showers, or see the exhibits at American Memorial Park. Beach time is possible, but don't count on clear skies all day. Heavy rain can make trails muddy, and rough seas can spoil plans for swimming or snorkelling. Keep your schedule flexible rather than setting aside one fixed day for the water.

Liberation Day

Saipan marks Liberation Day on July 4, with events honouring the 1944 battle to retake the island. Garapan's annual celebrations include a parade and carnival. It's a good chance to see a major local event, but the festivities bring more people into town.

If you hate crowds, visit Garapan's main sights outside the holiday period. July is generally quieter and often less expensive than the busier February-to-May and December travel seasons, though Liberation Day can be an exception.

Make room for rain

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option near Garapan, such as American Memorial Park, so a sudden shower doesn't derail the day.

For a practical Saipan tip, leave the Grotto until conditions are calm. This popular sea cave is reached by steep steps, and rough water can make entering the water unsafe. Check local conditions before you go, and switch to a land visit at Banzai Cliff if the sea is too rough. You'll still get a striking look at Saipan's coast without forcing a swim.
