Quito Weather in April

April: wet and grey

April feels cool, damp and cloudy in Quito. Rain falls on many days, often leaving the streets of the Centro Histórico slick and the views from El Panecillo hidden by cloud. The high is around 16°C, but evenings feel chilly. March is wetter still; May is less rainy.

You can still explore churches, museums and covered markets between showers. Give long outdoor walks or a clear view from the TelefériQo a flexible spot in your day. Don't count on a sunny afternoon in Parque La Carolina.

Easter in the city

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, sometimes falls in April. On Good Friday, the Jesús del Gran Poder procession winds through the historic centre. It draws large crowds, so expect busy streets around the route. Restaurants also serve fanesca, a thick soup made for the Easter season.

For families, the procession can be a memorable way to see Quito's traditions, but little ones may find the crowds and long wait tiring. Check the route locally, then choose a quieter spot nearby rather than trying to cross the procession.

Quieter, with a catch

Away from Easter, April is usually calmer than Quito's busier July-to-September season. You may find more choice in hotels and softer rates, though prices vary. Holy Week can bring a short rush, especially in the Centro Histórico.

A useful local move: duck into the Museo del Carmen Alto when rain closes in. It's in the historic centre, so you can pair it with nearby churches without trekking across town in wet weather. The rain can also slow traffic, so allow extra time for a taxi ride up to El Panecillo.
