Quito feels cool and damp in October. Daytime highs reach 17°C, but evenings can dip to 7°C. Rain falls on 18 days, and thick cloud often hides the surrounding peaks. September is much drier, while November is wetter.

You can still explore the Old Town's churches and museums between showers, then duck into a café for locro de papa, a potato-and-cheese soup. Save long outdoor walks for a dry spell. Muddy paths and poor visibility can spoil a hike, and the TelefériQo's mountain views may vanish into cloud.

Events and crowds

October 9 marks Ecuador's independence holiday for Guayaquil. It can bring a long weekend and more domestic travel, though the main celebrations are in Guayaquil, not Quito. October 31 is also Día del Escudo, the national coat of arms day; it's a civic observance, not a major Quito festival.

Quito is generally quieter than during the July-to-September travel season, so you may find less pressure at sights and better-value stays. The October holiday weekend can be an exception. For budget travellers, midweek visits to the historic centre are often calmer than holiday dates.

A practical Quito tip

Check the TelefériQo's visibility before setting out. Cloud cover is common, so a clear forecast doesn't guarantee a view from the top. If the cable car disappears into cloud, spend the time around Plaza Grande or La Ronda instead; both are easy to pair with indoor stops.

Families can keep the day flexible: Quito's sudden showers make a fixed, all-outdoor plan harder to enjoy. A museum visit near the Old Town gives you a useful fallback when rain sets in.
